Summer Activities

During the summer of 2008, i was given a task to research the themes Specatcle, Power, and Memory, and to go out and look at things that i don’t normaly go and see, trying to link the two if possible. one of the first things i did was to look at the meanings, so that i can look at things that can be conveyed or seen in such a way that they can be linked to these themes. however, would people see what i see? or is what i am conveying from what i see or hear the same thing that everyone else is conveying? i went around to some art galleries in london (as i live there) and i was quite surprised as to why i don’t go and look at art regularly or more often. ofcourse not everthing i was looking at took my breath away, however, i was finding some of the paintings quite fascinating. i took pictures so that i can remind myself and try to draw thoughts from them.

Paula Rego (Human Cargo)

Paula Rego (Human Cargo)

the first place i went was to the Marlborough art gallery, and this was one set of paintings that caught my attention. Paula Rego’s ‘Human Cargo’ appeared to me as quite unusual, some of the characters didn’t look normal, however i believe that it was done to give each person character, to show that each person is different and to show what their feeling. the painting also looks very believable because everyone actualy looks like they’re bored/fed up and waiting to arrive some place new. althought you might find that each person does not have a lot of detail featuring on them, their enuf to allow the mind to stare and think.

another place i went to was the Annely Juda gallery just off of oxford street in london. there was an exhibition of some of Suzanne Treister’s ‘Alchemy’ paintings.

these paintings were realy something fresh to my eyes. to me it’s a different kind of art. i’ve neer seen someone use lots of text as refrence to the happenings of the world, especially in such an eye-catching way. the fact that she calls this exhibition ‘Alchemy’ realy does say it all. i feel that she is showing how big and important worldly political issues are and how they are all tied in together.

The TV Show

i applied for 2 tickets to go see ‘the charlotte church show’, and luckily i managed to get tickets for the last show in season 3. i took my brother with me as i thought it would be a good experience for him to see how it all works for broadcasted shows, as well as for me to take a good look how the show is handled on the set. it wasn’t my first time going to see a TV show, but it was the biggest, so seeing how things are done on this scale was an eye-opener.
